As more storms head for the tri-states, one town is still picking up the pieces after Tuesday morning's storm. At least 26 residents in Beardstown, Illinois are without a home, and many more face property damage. Straight line winds ripped through the town around 2:00 Tuesday morning. For four hours, tenants at an apartment on seventh street were in the dark.
"I received a call about 6:30 in the morning," said Don Benz, a Red Cross volunteer.
From that point on, the Red Cross stepped in to help, the majority of its victims were from the same apartments.
"The entire roof, it's completely folded up in the street," said Benz, in reference to the apartment complex. Winds took off the roof, smashing the entire thing into a tree.
All the that's left of the tenants home: water damage and debris from fallen ceiling. Red cross volunteers have worked since Tuesday setting up a shelter for the victims at Beardstown High School, using the gym for a sleeping area and the Home Economic room for food. Twenty people have moved into the shelter since the storm. They're left with only the few items they had on them at the time of the storm. No one knows how long it will be before they are able to move back home or the extent of the town's damage.
"We're here until that happens," said Benz.
