DEKALB, ILL. (AP) -- Health experts in DeKalb County in northern Illinois say heavy rains over the spring have created breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
DeKalb County Health Department assistant administrator Jane Lux says those breeding grounds are likely filled with floodwater mosquitoes, which aren't believed to carry West Nile virus.
Lux says the heavy rains may also be responsible for keeping the northern house mosquito at bay.
Lux says that those mosquitoes do spread West Nile virus.
She says experts usually see more cases of West Nile virus during summers that are hot and dry.
Experts say there are about six mosquito species found in the region.
