PEORIA, ILL. -- Peoria police plan to add police patrols and other tactics.
They acknowledge some might consider racial profiling to combat increased gun violence in the city.
Police Chief Steven Settingsgaard said Tuesday that 78 people have been shot in Peoria this year.
More than two-dozen have happened since mid-June.
Police plan to add extra officers to overnight patrols and to strictly enforce juvenile curfew rules.
Settingsgaard also said police plan to make numerous traffic stops based on what police call reasonable suspicion.
The measures will be concentrated in neighborhoods where most residents are black.
The police chief asked that city residents worried about profiling give police what he called "a little slack" under the circumstances.
