SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- Officials are encouraging hunters to take a safety education course offered by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
State law requires anyone born since January 1980 to take the course in sessions organized by the state agency or online.
A minimum of 10 hours of instruction is involved.
Study courses are offered online through partnerships with Hunter-Ed.com and HunterExam.com.
Those taking the course online must also attend a one-day field session to complete certification.
The courses include instruction on hunting regulations, ethics and responsibility, archery, firearms, first aide, wildlife identification and conservation.
There were 22 hunting-related accidents in Illinois last year.
Two were fatal.
