DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- State officials say Iowa did not make the cut in the competition for federal funding under the Race to the Top education program.

The U.S. Education Department announced Tuesday that 18 states and the District of Columbia reached the second round of the school reform competition, giving them a chance to receive a share of $3 billion.

Although Iowa wasn't chosen, state Department of Education acting head Kevin Fangman says the planning that went into applying for the grant has helped officials sketch out the need for education improvements. He says it's not clear whether the state will apply for Race to the Top funding in the future.
