SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- Illinois authorities are warning residents of recently flooded areas to beware of flood water health dangers.

These contaminated waters can contain bacteria, fecal matter and other disease-causing organisms.

Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon Arnold says it's important to avoid skin contact with flood water.

That's especially true for cuts and sores.

Parents shouldn't let their kids play in flood waters, and residents should avoid food that's been exposed to floodwater.

Also, the department advises that in power outages, a fully stocked freezer will keep food frozen for two days with the door closed.

Frozen meats and vegetables that have thawed should be thrown out.

Refrigerated food will stay cold up for up to about six hours.
