Coffee Stop to highlight importance of National Health Center Week

HANNIBAL, MO. -- The following is a press release from the Salt River Community Health Center in Hannibal, Mo.:

Salt River Community Health Center, also known as Community Health Center, has announced plans to celebrate National Community Health Center Week August, 2- 5th.  The CHC has scheduled events throughout the week to mark the National event, beginning with a Coffee Stop at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, August 2nd to Kick-Off the celebration. The event is open to the public and will include a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Hannibal Chamber of Commerce, the presentation of a Mayoral Proclamation and remarks from State Representatives: Brian Munzlinger and Rachel Bringer, the CHC President, Terrell Dempsey and Executive Director Joan Hynek. A Field Representative from US Senator Claire McCaskill will also be in attendance.  The event is expected to last up to 30 minutes and coffee and a light snack will be provided.

Community Health Centers (CHCs) such as this one can be found nationwide and are recognized for reduction of or even the elimination of the disparity between health services that is many times based on financial resources. Community Health Centers provide local and affordable access to comprehensive primary care services, inclusive of medical, dental and mental health, providing a true health care home to the underserved.  CHCs remove barriers to care which lead to improved health for citizens and a better quality of life.  

Other events planned to mark the occasion are as follows:

Monday August 2nd and Tuesday August 3rd: FREE Dental Screenings for Children: Preschool – 5th Grade by appointment. CHC will take appointments every 15 minutes from 9-3:30 p.m. both days. In addition to dental screenings, child lead testing will be available on Tuesday August 3rd from 1-4 p.m.

Monday August 2nd from 10:30-11:30 a.m.: CHC Care Coordinator and RN, Julina Kirby will be at the Palmyra Senior Center offering FREE Blood Pressure Screenings and talking with seniors about blood pressure.

Tuesday, August 3rd: FREE Health Screenings for Adults. CHC will be offering free screenings that include: blood pressure, bone density, cholesterol, blood sugar, Hemoglobin A1c, heart health, skin damage and depression. Screenings will be held 8-Noon.

Wednesday August 4th: CHC Care Coordinator and RN, Julina Kirby will be at the Palmyra Senior Center offering FREE Blood Pressure Screenings and talking with seniors about blood pressure.

Thursday, August 5th: CHC will sponsor a Family Fun Fair on its campus from 4-7 p.m. This FREE event will be open to the public and will offer activities geared to children and their families that promote healthy living. Bring the family and enjoy a fun-filled evening with your family
