As department heads retire, one position will be created
FT. MADISON, IA. -- Fort Madison is looking to streamline its public works operation in the next few years.
The city's current public works department does not include the water department or the waste water treatment plant.
Tuesday, August 3rd the city council voted to move forward with a plan to consolidate the heads of those operations into one public works director position.
"The three department heads over the current departments are will with in 2-5 years of retirement. This is kind of a road map so we know where we're going as those people retire and so we can make changes based on that plan," said City Manager Byron Smith.
"I definitely don't think our service level will change we'll still be providing the same services and hopefully this will be a way to save some costs and be able to use that money differently," said Smith.
When the three positions are eventually consolidated into one, the city will save between $70,000 and $100,000.
