Survey could bring in more money for city projects

KEOKUK, IA. -- Nearly a decade ago 49% of Keokuk's households had a low to moderate income.

Mayor Tom Marion thinks that percentage has grown.

And that could help Keokuk get more funding for city projects.

320 Keokuk households will be receiving income surveys by mail in the next few days (as of 8/4).

The city needs at least 300 of them to be filled out and returned as soon as possible.

The surveys will determine the amount of state and federal grant dollars Keokuk will receive.

If 51% or more of Keokuk's households have a low to moderate income, more money could be heading to the community.

"If we're not getting those surveys back, we're going to contact them by telephone, personally go door to door. We've indicated how important these are and how important they are to the community. If we get more money for projects, of course we can do more projects. We're working on everything from streets to other infrastructure. We're doing the CSO, the combined sewer separation of sanitary and storm, so these are essential projects that we can get more money for and really help the citizens of Keokuk," said Keokuk Mayor Tom Marion.

There is a section on the survey for racial and ethnic information.

Mayor Tom Marion says that is completely optional, but stresses the income section is extremely important for the city.
