Iowa Democrats have their fingers crossed that a spending bill expected to be approved by congress could prevent 18 hundred teachers losing their jobs.
DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) --
On Monday Governor Chet Culver and U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin spoke at a Statehouse news conference about the 26 billion dollar bill aimed at avoiding the layoffs of teachers and other state and local government workers.

The measure was approved by the Senate last Thursday and the House is expected to pass it this week when it returns from summer recess.

The measure will also provide an additional 130 million dollars to prop up the Medicaid program which serves about 400 thousand people in Iowa.
