ADAMS COUNTY, ILL -- School zone speed limits also go into effect when school is in session.

It's important to remind you that in Illinois it is illegal for you to talk on your cell phone while driving through a school zone.

"And now at the beginning of the school year, we're seeing a lot of kids walking on the side of the road, or riding bicycles or scooters to school When we get in that school zone, we need to make sure they are focusing on the surroundings, " says Illinois State Trooper Mike Kindhart.

Trooper Kindhart says it is OK to talk on a hands free device while in a school zone.

However, it has to be completely hands free, so using your speakerphone function is not allowed.

Also, any driver who's under 19 years old cannot use their cell phone or hands free device at all while behind the wheel.
