QUINCY, ILL. -- A local dentist wants to move his practice to a property at 16th and Maine in Quincy, but it's causing some pain for a local group.
The owner wants to tear the building down and build a new facility that looks historic.
The Quincy Preserves doesn't want the house to be torn down.
The President of the group, Vicki Dempsey tells KHQA the home is about 100 years old.
She says in 1985, the East End Historic District was created, and it's part of the National Registry District.
The National Registry District came in and did an inventory of the buildings.
It was determined that the house at 20th and Maine is a contributing structure to the East End Historic District.
"And it is part to what makes Maine Street the kind of street you want to drive down. It is a beautiful bungalow that is in good shape, so it should be saved," says Dempsey.
There are three requests to speak at Monday night's city council meeting considering zoning of the property.
Last week, the zoning board ruled the back third of the property should not be zoned commercially.
Vicki Dempsey says her group agrees with that.
KHQA tried to contact the owner of the building as well as his attorney, but our calls were not returned.
Three people spoke at Monday night's city council meeting about this property's zoning.
Last week, the zoning board ruled the back third of the property should not be zoned commercially.
The council overrode the zoning board's recommendation and granted the rezoning to commercial for this property.
