Quincy student hurt in bus accident

QUINCY, ILL. -- Police say a Quincy Public School bus collided into the rear of a jeep on east State Street, just west of Carol at abourt 3 p.m. Monday afternoon.

The bus was carrying 36 Junior High students.

KHQA spoke with Superintendent Lonny Lemon. 

He said the only injury was a junior high boy complained that his neck hurt.

He was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

But Lemon says the student is okay and has been cleared to go home, and that he was just a little sore.

The bus driver, 61-year-old Cecil Haskins was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Details of Arrest or Offense: On Monday, 8/23/10 at about 1459 Hours, Quincy Police the Quincy Fire Department as well as the Adam's County Ambulance service were dispatched to east State Street and Carol for a traffic crash involving injuries. Upon arrival it was determined that a Quincy Public School bus and a 2006 Jeep were the vehicles involved. The school bus was carrying 36 Junior High age children at the time of the crash. There were two people in the Jeep. Both occupants of the jeep as well as one child on the school bus reported minor injuries. The driver and passenger in the Jeep, were treated at the scene and were not transported by ambulance. The juvenile was transported by ambulance to Blessing Hospital.

The investigation determined that both the Jeep and the School Bus were traveling east on State street just west of Carol. The Jeep stopped in traffic (due to westbound traffic on State) to make a left hand turn on to Carol. The School Bus did not stop and collided with the rear of the Jeep. The driver of the School Bus, Cecil Haskins, was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid and Accident. Both vehicles were in drivable condition and left the scene under their own power.
