A new survey has found that fewer people are wearing their seatbelts in Missouri compared to last year. In this KHQA Safe Family report, 76 percent of Missourians who ride in cars buckle up. That's compared to 84 percent nationally. Marisa Ellison with the Missouri Department of Transportation said taking those few seconds to buckle your seat belt will help save lives.
"The seat belt and the car is designed to keep the person in their seat. If you're thrown from your vehicle and many of our fatalities are just that, they're thrown from a vehicle. That's when they're killed," said MoDOT Community Relations Manager Maris Ellison.
The survey also showed that people who drive vans and SUV's are more likely to wear a seat belt than pickup truck drivers.
