Report shows measurable decline since 2002
QUINCY, IL. -- For the last few years the Illinois State Police have cracked down on drunk drivers through its You Drink and Drive You Lose campaign.
The Illinois Department of Transportation recently reported that the number of alcohol related deaths have steadily declined since 2002.
That kind of encouraging news is why once again state police officers will be out in force over the Labor Day holiday.
Trooper Mike Kindhart with the Illinois State Police says, "Right now in August we are 30 less fatalities than we were at this time last year. And when you see those types of numbers and you talk about the seat belt compliance, you talk about the compliance with alcohol and having the enforcement that we are having , when you see that we are reducing fatalities, it's all worth it."
Both the Illinois State Police and the Missouri Highway Patrol will participate in a national campaign involving roadside safety checks and seatbelt compliance over the holiday weekend.
