CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (AP) -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released a draft report that calls for a better, if limited, flood-protection system in Cedar Rapids.
The Cedar River swamped the city in 2008, covering 10 square miles.
The report, released Wednesday, has the same conclusions that the corps made public in June, which the City Council rejected.
The Gazette says the report makes it clear that the city needs a new flood-protection system. But the only system that is economically justifiable features basic concrete flood walls to protect most of the east side of the river in downtown. The city says flood protection also is needed for the west side.
The cost of such a system is nearly $100 million, with the city responsible for $35 million.
