HANNIBAL, MO. -- After working for nearly 24 hours, a dredge with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been able to reopen the Mississippi River south of Hannibal.
Earlier this week, the U-S Coast Guard shut down the river from an area near Sawyer's Creek south to the Continental Cement Company.
At first, it was thought the river would be closed through the weekend to all commercial traffic.
But this morning, the Coast Guard announced the river was back open to all traffic.
The river was shut down because of silt and debris from earlier flood waters had caused a build up on the river bed and the 12 foot channel could not be maintained.
