QUINCY, IL. -- Tuesday, Missouri farmers around Mark Twain Lake heard good news from Governor Jay Nixon. He announced a $3 million plan to encourage farmers to practice voluntary conservation practices.
In recent years, farms have lost vital minerals from soil washing into Mark Twain Lake. That fertilizer-rich runoff has also caused algae blooms making it difficult to treat the water coming out of Mark Twain Lake. The lake is the source of drinking water for 42,000 people in Northeast Missouri.
Nixon says with this money, farms will operate more effectively and the lake will stay cleaner.
