ADAMS COUNTY, ILL. -- A new study says your child may not be safe in his or her booster seat. In this KHQA Safe Family Report, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety says most booster seats are not a good fit for all vehicles. The group studied lap and shoulder belt fits in 72 booster seats for children 4 to 8 years old.
"The supposition sometimes is to just throw the booster seat in and the kid hops in the car. Just like any other seat, it needs to fit that child and has to fit the vehicle. And with the booster seats what they do is reposition the belt so the lap/shoulder belt fits the child properly," said Hummel.
Hummel says the proper location for your child's seat belts should be across the mid-shoulder and upper thigh. If you're unsure about the booster seat in your car, the Adams County Safe Kids Coalition will sponsor a Car Seat Check Saturday, Sept. 25 at Quincy's Central Fire Station at 9th and Vermont streets. The event will last from noon to 2 p.m.
If you can't make it that day, Jan Hummel says you can always visit your local fire or health departments for help.
