BURLINGTON, IOWA -- The following is a news release from the Des Moines County Iowa Sheriff's Department in Burlington:
Jesse Joseph Dodge, age 26, of Burlington, Iowa was arrested on Monday at the Kum & Go Convenience Store in Mediapolison on charges of Assault on Law Enforcement Officer (two counts), Carrying Weapons, Harassment First Degree, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Mischief Third Degree, and Interference with Official Acts.
There were also warrants out for DMC/Preventing Apprehension, FTA Illegal Consumption, FTA Retrial, FTA Jury Trial, Sentencing, Hearing on Release (4 counts), and FTA for Sentencing.
On September 27, 2010 deputies were dispatched to the Kum & Go in Mediapolis in reference to a man with a gun.
At this time an officer was one block away and was on scene in seconds.
Upon his arrival he encountered a white male subject near the entrance door.
He announced his presence and ordered to see the individual’s hands.
This individual then looked up and threw an item under the vehicle he was standing next to.
The officer approached this individual as he began to make his way back towards the store door and continued to order this individual to the ground with no cooperation.
The individual was eventually tazed and then handcuffed.
A long fillet knife was then taken from a sheath and was on the individual's right side and all items were empted from his pockets.
It was clear to see that the item he threw was a gun and it was lying under the truck he was next to.
The individual was asked for his name which was Jeremiah Levins.
At this time the individual was still attempting to get out of the squad car every time they tried to shut the door.
Once the door was closed, Deputy Rob Purdy and Deputy Chad McCune arrived along with Chief Deputy Jeff White and Sheriff Mike Johnstone.
They were able to speak with the grandfather of this individual, who stated that the individuals name was Jesse Dodge.
Jesse was asked several more times what his name was at which time he insisted that it was not Jesse.
Jesse then became very violent, kicking at deputies and bit Deputy Purdy in the arm.
Deputy Purdy then peppered sprayed Jesse to gain control of him. Deputies then attempted to restrain Jesse’s legs with a leg restraint.
Deputies were then discussing the identity of this individual at which time Jesse slipped the leg restraint and kicked out the rear passenger window of squad 2911.
Deputies were then able to get Jesse back under control and it was decided that Deputy Purdy was going to ride in the back seat of the squad with Jesse to the jail.
Deputy Purdy then went around to the passenger side of the squad, at which time Jesse became violent again and kicked Deputy McCune in the side of the face.
Deputy Purdy was able to then taze Jesse and regained control over him.
At this time Deputy Purdy rode in the back of the squad car as it was driven to the Des Moines County Jail.
Approximately 5 miles out of Mediapolis Jesse became violent again, at which time Deputy Purdy had to taze Jesse to regain control over him again.
Once at the Des Moines County Jail Jesse became very violent with the jail staff at which time he had to be tazed several times to gain control of him.
During Jesse’s violent outrages, he did threaten to kill Deputy Purdy.
Jesse was eventually restrained in a chair for officer’s safety along with his own.
