HANNIBAL, MO. -- "We have our Tom Sawyer Tournament. This comes once a year. It's a really great tournament. Everybody's getting pumped up and having a good time," said Isaac Lichty, a martial artist who received his black belt a week ago.
Saturday, Isaac was one of about 200 martial artists in the midWest that competed in the thirteenth year for Tom Sawyer Karate Championships. Hannibal Middle School hosted the competition beginning at 9:30 this morning. Participants paid $40 to enter. All ages, divisions and ranks were invited to the event. The school gym was divided into age groups, the winner of each match awarded a trophy.
Instructors accompanied many of these martial artists Saturday. It was a chance to watch the progress made since their last performances.
