WIll cover 80 miles and nearly 300 families

COLMAR, ILL. -- Residents of rural McDonough County are a few shovel fulls of dirt closer to better drinking water.

An official ground breaking ceremony was held Monday, October 4th for Phase II of the expansion of West Prairie Water Cooperative.

This project coincides with a similar project with the Dallas Rural Water District.

The cost is $3.4 million and is being financed with funds from USDA's Rural Development.

It will cover an 80 mile stretch and serve close to 300 families.

"Trying to get people some decent water to drink as far as health standards and also as far as quantity of water. We have a lot of wells that simply don't produce enough to do what's needed," said George Dixon, President of West Prairie Water Cooperative.

The project is supposed to be completed by end of April, but many households will be online sooner.

It will cover Lamoine, Chalmers and parts of Bethel Township.
