JACKSONVILLE, ILL. -- Students at Illinois College got a rare look inside the life of a famous Discovery Channel storm chaser Monday. Meteorologist Reed Timmer spoke to a full house of freshmen during a special program for the first year students.
On the Discovery Channel's Storm Chaser's reality show, Timmer has experienced his fair share of nasty weather. There's no wind in his lengthy resume. He's risked everything chasing down nearly 250 tornadoes and a dozen hurricanes. When the rubber hits the road, that's 50 thousand miles of highway a year from Mexico to Canada.
"We chase all year 'round," is how Timmer put it.
His life-long love affair with severe weather began early when hail bashed in his parent's video camera as he taped a thunderstorm. He went on to become a Meteorologist and got his Ph.D in the subject. But now on any given day throughout the year, he's traveling in his souped up Chevy Tahoe, the Dominator, looking for his next storm. You can watch him do it on Storm Chasers this season on the Discovery Channel.
"It's for adrenaline junkies, but it's science too."
But while most would be satisfied to watch from a distance, this guy drives straight into the storm, with the intent to study the inner workings of these natural terrors for himself.
Storm Chasers picks back up this season on Discovery Channel next Wednesday, October 13 at 9:00 p.m.
