CARTHAGE, ILL. (AP) -- The Illinois Supreme Court has rejected the death sentence appeals filed by a 32-year-old Keokuk, Iowa man convicted of killing two Hancock County girls in 1996. A Knox County jury convicted Daniel Ramsey in 1997 of raping and killing 16-year-old Laura Marson of Basco and killing 12-year-old Lonna Sloop of Burnside in 1996. He also was found guilty of shooting his former girlfriend, Rachel Sloop, and two toddlers.

Ramsey was sentenced to die, but the Illinois Supreme Court overturned the conviction in 2000 and ordered a new trial. At his second trial, in 2007 in Fulton County, Ramsey pleaded guilty to the murders, and the jury again ruled he should be put to death.

Barb Sloop, mother of Lonna and Rachel Sloop, told the Quincy Herald-Whig she was pleased Ramsey's appeals had been denied.
