QUINCY, ILL. -- For more than 200 people, the weather couldn't have been better for a 5-K run through Quincy's historic district Saturday. They took to the street at 24th and Jersey Saturday morning for the Sammy Fund Fall Run/Walk.
The race began at 9 a.m. with the first runners crossing the finish line within 20 minutes. For many, the race wasn't about staying in shape, it was to remember Samantha Otte.
"Sam was a young lady that died 11 years ago when she was 10 years old. And for the past 11 years, we've raised over $400,000 and those contributed dollars goes right back to the community, for all the kids, but a lot of them are kids that don't have the advantages that other kids have," said Bev Bacheld, who's on the board of directors for the group.
Each person paid $20 to partake in the walk/run. After the race, people could bid on a silent auction held at Madison Park. Saturday evening, the group unveiled its newest fundraiser for Sammy, the "Frank Calkins Texas Holdem." Sunday, the fundraiser continues with a golf outing.
