DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- The Iowa Department of Public Health is marking International Infection Prevention Week.
Public health experts say Iowans are encouraged to understand how health care workers and administrators work to prevent infections and make patient care safer. The department says 5 to 10 percent hospitalized patients are affected. Statistics show nearly 2 million infections annually and 100,000 deaths.
The department says it is working with the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative to partner with about 70 acute care Iowa hospitals to measure and reduce preventable infections.
