HANNIBAL, MO. -- Students at Eugene Field school in Hannibal have a new focus. Last year, students didn't fare as well on MAP tests as their peers in the rest of the district. Now, Eugene Field administrators want to change that. Teachers plant to focus more on math and communication arts.
"We have a literacy coach that's working with the students at Eugene Field. She works with teachers and students. What she does is model good reading instruction for classroom teachers, helping them plan and then works with some of our students who are really struggling in that area to give them an additional boost, besides what they did in the classroom," said Maria Mundle, the Director of Curriculum for Hannibal Public Schools.
"One of the things that we really like that we're doing are more focus parent nights. Our parents are really good. They come to just about everything we have. And just letting them know the easy things they can do to help their child be a better reader and do better in math. A lot of times it's really something simple and they don't always realize that," said Eugene Field Principal Vicki Dudding.
Dudding says students who read just fifteen minutes every night will increase their vocabulary and language development.
