DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- A hard freeze warning will be going into effect for part of Iowa as strong winds from a massive storm tearing across the country give way to cold temperatures.

The National Weather Service issued the freeze warning for south central and southeast Iowa for late Thursday into early Friday.

Overnight lows are expected to dip into the upper 20s, which will end the growing season and kill crops and other sensitive plants.

The freeze warning comes after two days of high winds that flipped semitrailers and downed power lines in Iowa.

The rare, fast-moving storm brought winds up to 81 mph, rain and tornadoes that started in the Midwest on Tuesday and continued Wednesday, moving into the southern and eastern U.S.
