SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- Illinois officials are urging preparation for the coming cold, snowy weather.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency will highlight tips for safely navigating dangerous cold temperatures and winter storms during November.

IEMA interim Director Joe Klinger says more people die because of cold temperatures than other weather hazards such as tornadoes, lightning and floods.

The agency, the National Weather Service and the American Red Cross cooperated on a winter storm preparedness guide to help people stay safe at home, in the car, or at work or school.

A preparedness kit should allow people to stay safe for at least three days and should include a battery powered weather radio, flashlight, batteries, nonperishable food, water, first-aid kit, extra medications and more.
