Special breakfast is way to say thank you
QUINCY, ILL. -- Veterans from across the country received a special thank you for their service from Hy-Vee Thursday.
The Veterans Day breakfast started at a Kansas City Hy-Vee store in 2002.
It was so popular that it became a tradition in stores across the country.
And that includes our area as well.
We stopped by the Hy-Vee on Harrison street and asked two veterans of the Korean War if they had any messages for today's military families.
Dale Halpin of Quincy said, "You should be very proud of them and definitely pray for them. That's so important."
Norbert Bentele of Quincy said, " I think the family needs to be appreciated as much as the veteran does that's serving. And they should be proud of them and prepared to welcome them home as well."
We also spoke with Chris Mohr of Quincy.
He served in Somalia in 1993, in Iraq in 2004, 2006 and 2009 and he just returned from duty in Afghanistan.
He said, " Thank you very much for your patience , your service I know how (much) a struggle it is for a family member when their loved one's overseas. My wife has done it for three out of the last 6 years and I know all the struggles that she goes through. And I really appreciate all the sacrifice they do for us."
Close to 500 veterans were expected to enjoy the free breakfast at the Harrison Hy-Vee.
