HANNIBAL, MO. -- Lyndell Shumake made his first speech as the Missouri District 6 Representative Elect at the Hannibal American Legion Thursday morning.

People came out to show their support for Veterans, complete with a gun salute and taps.

They listened to Shumake speak and had a surprise speech from Chef Jon Ashton.

Ashton is from Liverpool, England. He thanked the Veterans for their service.

"Veterans Day means a lot to me. I thinka lot of people my age forget about Veterans Day. My father and my grandmother were both in WWI and WWII and I think just to take time out of your day and just to honor the Veterans is really important," said Chef Jon Ashton.

One thing Veterans don't want people to do is forget.

Many fear as younger generations grow older, they'll forget about those who served before their time.

"We're a forgetting nation. We forget what's happened in the past and we can't let people like these WWII Veterans go and not be recognized," said Vietnam Vet Jess Ornelas.
