KAHOKA, MO. -- Deer season is in full swing and Missouri's governor is taking part. Governor Jay Nixon shot an 8-point buck Saturday morning. He met with fellow hunters at the Kahoka Meat Processing and Deli plant before donating his deer to the Share the Harvest Program.
This year Missouri hunters are working with the Conservation Department and food banks to help families in need throughout the Show Me State.
"If we didn't have hunters that are going to use their skills and their generosity at the same time, and these fine processors like the one here in Kahoka helping us to be a seamless network across our state, we couldn't do it. Missouri's program is the best in the country. We expanded it dramatically to get to ten thousand deer, meaning that high protein venison is going to add to the diets of folks from food banks, folks who are in need," said Missouri Governor Jay Nixon.
Last year more than 213,000 pounds of venison were donated through the Share the Harvest program.
