QUINCY, ILL. -- Late Sunday night John Ortwerth passed away after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Ortwerth coached the Quincy University men's basketball team from 1960-75 and led the Hawks to NAIA National Tournament appearances in 1964 and 1967.

Ortwerth finished his coaching career with 259 wins, the most in program history, and was named to the Quincy Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978.

Ortwerth was 79-years-old and is survived by his wife, Joanne, and his six children.

Prior to Tuesday night's Hawks season opener, Quincy University will hold a moment of silence in his honor.
