ISP says minimize distractions and pay attention
Highways will be busy this Thanksgiving with an estimated 42.2 million people traveling at least 50 miles from home, according to AAA.
Here's a KHQA Safe Family report about what that means for you.
That's an 11% increase from last year.
The busiest travel days are expected to be Wednesday, November 23rd and Sunday, November 28th.
The Illinois State Police says staying safe in all that traffic can be very simple, minimize the distractions.
"I think it's paying attention. Focus on the task at hand. It's making sure you're obeying the speed limit, buckling everybody up in the car, no distractions in the car, put the cell phones down and arrive alive, arrive at your destinations safely," said Trooper Mike Kindhart.
The Illinois State Police also says there are still some sections of highway that may be under construction during holiday travel this year and people need to pay attention to the signs.
"If it's posted at 45 mph, even though workers aren't present, we still need to be aware that it's out there for safety. To make sure that if there are cones or barricades and things set up, maybe even heavy equipment still out there, that's why the speed limit is reduced, not necessarily just for workers alone, but for the safety and the dangers that are in that zone," said Kindhart.
