Six Hannibal men have been arrested and thousands of dollars in equipment seized as part of what Illinois authorities call an elaborate home repair scam.
The suspects were identified as 19-year-old James L. Culp, 24-year-old Eddie T. Jones, 26-year-old Evan B. Phillips, 31-year-old Bradley D. Rickey, 42-year-old James W. Ruby and 47-year-old Michael G. Maddox.
The Springfield State Journal-Register reported authorities said they were called to a home near Pleasant Plains just outside the state capital about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday by a woman who said she was scared for her safety and that men were there demanding money.
The woman told authorities she had given a crew of about 15 men permission to rock part of her driveway earlier in the day.
When the woman later saw that the men had rocked the entire drive against her wishes, she asked what the cost would be and got two different answers.
The woman told the men she wouldn't pay and then went back inside and called authorities.
The suspects were taken to the Sangamon County Jail. Charges of aggravated home repair fraud and trespassing were being sought.
Authorities say the men may have been part of a roving home repair scam operation that also struck in Adams and Hancock counties.
Sangamon County told the Illinois Attorney General's office about the arrests, the State Journal-Register reported.
