Keokuk looking to public for options of what to do with historic Keokuk Union Depot

KEOKUK, IOWA -- The city of Keokuk wants to know what you think about a focal point on its riverfront.

The city recently bought the historic Keokuk Union Depot from the Keokuk Junction Railway for $1.

It's also leasing the surrounding property from the Railway for $1 a year.

A meeting Monday, November 29th gave the public an opportunity to share what they would like to see done with the building.

"One of the problems is the roof is just in terrible shape. There's a lot of water coming in and leaking in and so it's damaging one end of it, the non-fixed-up end. So it's a real problem, something has to be done immediately. If the roof goes, the rest of the building will probably go," said Mayor Tom Marion.

The city has received a $15,000 grant from the State Historical Society of Iowa.

It requires a $7,500 match, that money will go toward emergency repairs for the roof.

That will be only a temporary fix.

The building needs to be restored to its original form to be eligible for more grant money.
