The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has received a complaint from a resident of a scam that is taking place.

The resident received a letter in the mail post marked from Canada along with a check in the amount of $3,500.00 drawn upon Regions Bank of Florida.

The letter states that the recipient is a winner of a lottery draw as a customer from major stores such as Lowes, WalGreens, Best Buy, and K-Mart.

During the investigation of the check it was found that this is a scam and an attempt to get the recipient information and bank information.

Do not attempt to cash any such checks and please destroy them.

This comes at a time when people are in need with the holiday season upon us.

Remember never give out your personal information to anyone over the phone that you are unfamiliar with and never give out any of your banking and credit information.

Also make sure you use common sense during the Holiday season and if it sounds too good to be true, then it is a high possibility that it is a scam.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact your local law enforcement agency.
