HANNIBAL, MO. -- In the season of giving, we wanted to see how our local community centers are holding up.
The Douglass Community Services in Hannibal says its serving more clients than ever, but should have enough food to last throughout the winter, thanks to the many food drives local organizations have created.
More than anything, the center needs help keeping the city lit. Executive Director Dave Dexheimer says the center gets 15 to 20 calls a day from clients needing help with their utility and heating bills. That kind of money is hard to come by.
"We try to help as best we can, but that's probably where the greatest need is and one of the reasons why we're seeing so many people come in for food is simply because they have to make those choices now. They either have to pay their utilities or rent or medicine or food. There just aren't enough funds to meet that need in the community," said Dexheimer.
Dexheimer says food and monetary donations are always welcome. If you'd like to donate or volunteer at the center, click here for more information.
