Pocket parks are open green space intended for passive use
MACOMB, ILL. -- The city of Macomb could be bringing some green space into its business districts.
Community Development Coordinator Ed Basch wants to add an amendment to a current city ordinance that would allow for "pocket parks" in business districts.
Pocket parks are areas less than 25,000 square feet.
They're intended as a passive open space area.
Even a small space like the one left by the Chelsea's Hallmark store in the downtown area could be turned into a pocket park.
"We didn't set a minimum, we're proposing a maximum, I said less than 25,000 square feet because if you get bigger than that than it really turns into a whole park," said Basch.
Pocket parks are not allowed to have any active recreational facilities, playground equipment or enclosed structures, just open green space.
The amendment to the ordinance will go before the planning commission in a public hear Wednesday, December 8th.
