QUINCY, ILL. -- 69-years-ago Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese.

On this day in 1941, hundreds of Japanese planes began raining bombs and torpedoes onto Oahu's U.S. military ships and planes.

Americans recognize Pearl Harbor Day across the country on December 7.

On Tuesday flags accross the Tri-States are being flown at half staff in remembrance.

There is a shrinking number of soldiers and sailors who remembered that day, but one KHQA's Tegan Orpet caught up with had enlisted in the navy just before Pearl Harbor.

Gene Ostermiller was there right after the attack, he said that nothing was really left when he got there.

Ostermiller served in the Navy for 8 years until he retired.
