Tax accounts for abotu $50,000/year or .5% or general fund
HANNIBAL, MO. -- On Tuesday, December 7th the Hannibal City Council will consider a proposal that could mean fewer taxes for citizens.
A councilman has proposed repealing the city's wheel tax.
Hannibal residents must buy a $5 sticker to own and operate a car, it's $10 for business vehicles.
The city will not issue this sticker unless the resident pays their personal property taxes.
This sticker system is the city's only leverage to get people to pay their personal property taxes.
We were told the wheel tax brings in about $50,000 a year for the city.
That accounts for about half a percent of Hannibal's $10 million general fund.
Drivers we talked to were split on whether the tax should be repealed.
"I don't think we need it. I've lived in other towns and they didn't use it. Just like we're standing here right now we're paying extra taxes to be out here and there's just taxes on everything. It's just too much," said Hannibal resident Chad Nelson.
Another resident who didn't want to go on camera told us it does not amount to much money per person, but once you add it up, it could mean a good amount to the city.
He said he has no problem keeping the tax.
KHQA's Rajah Maples will be at the City Council meeting.
