Truman passes a new smoking ban on campus
KIRKSVILLE, MO -- KTVO's Ela Soroka tells us that no smoking signs will soon be posted around campus at Truman State University.
The Truman State University Board of Governors just passed a new policy restricting smoking on campus.
The new policy goes into effect on August 1st, 2011 and will prohibit smoking within 25 feet of any building on university property.
Isaac Robinson, Student Body President says although the university is taking a step toward a smoke-free campus, it’s not enough.
“It’s a disappointing outcome especially since because every single constituency group on campus and their representatives have spoken out in favor for a 100% smoke free campus,” Robinson said.
He also went on to say he knows the students won’t give up and will work for a stricter policy in the near future.
“I don’t think students are done working at all especially now that we see more students coming from cities that are smoke free. The students will continue to push the issue, I think we will have to wait for a turn over in the board with the governor appointing new individuals to the board and going that route.”
Over 400 universities nationwide have enacted 100% smoke-free polices, 17 of those schools are in Missouri.
