QUINCY, ILL. -- This week, the Blessing Health System will care for more than just patients. More than 60 of its employees and their families will get a care package filled with toys and food for the holidays. It's all part of Blessing's 28th annual Christmas Care Basket and Toy Drive Campaign.
"Right now with the economy, with the way things are, they may need help this year with high electricity bills, needing extra money for Christmas gifts," said Daphne Akers, an employee at Blessing Hospital.
Fortunately, the hospital has seen less of a need this year.
"That's always nice to see. You always hope that families are doing better, but in case of hardships, we are always here to help them out," said Akers.
This Christmas, Blessing's making sure these families get the essentials for the holiday, plus some added bonuses. Along with the care packages, kids will also receive donated toys, even bikes.
"The employees of Blessing Health System actually adopt a kid from one of the families in need of toys this year. So then they go out and take their wish lists from the kids and they go shopping. Then the families can come and pick those up along with the food," said Akers.
It's a small way of giving back to those who give year round.
