DES MOINES, IOWA (AP) -- Iowa farmers could face hefty fines if they violate weight limits while hauling newly harvested grain.
Governor Chet Culver has issued an emergency proclamation that allows for temporary vehicle weight limit exemptions. It's a move similar to previous years.
But this time, the maximum gross weight can't exceed 88,000 pounds without an oversize/overweight permit. Also, trucks can't top a maximum weight determined under a formula by more than 10 percent.
Officials say the tighter rules are meant to protect Iowa's roads and bridges.
Mindy Poldberg of the Iowa Corn Growers Association, says farmers who violate the rule could be fined from $200 to $2,000.
She says it means most farmers can't load their trucks in the field with as much corn as before.
