BETTENDORF, IOWA (AP) -- UPDATED: December 16 at 8:45 a.m.

Authorities say a suspected bank robber who escaped custody at an Iowa hospital and eluded authorities in his hospital gown and flip-flops has been captured near the Iowa-Illinois border.

Iowa City police said in a Wednesday night statement that Anthony Koehlhoeffer had been caught by law enforcement in Bettendorf after wrecking a car he is believed to have stolen.

Koehlhoeffer was taken to a hospital to be checked over. No word on any injuries.

No other details were immediately released.

Koehlhoeffer had been taken to University Hospitals in Iowa City on Tuesday for treatment under a court order.

Our sister station KTVO tells us that an accused bank robber is on the loose Wednesday.

Southeast Iowa law enforcement agencies are on a manhunt for 20-year-old Anthony Koelhoeffer.

Koelhoeffer walked away from University Iowa Hospitals on Tuesday night.

The Jefferson County man was being held on $105,000 cash only bond in the Jefferson County Jail as while he waited for his January trial date.

Jefferson County attorney Tom Dille tells KTVO that he had recently been transported to University of Iowa Hospitals for medical treatment.

Federal law does not allow authorities to disclose the reason for his hospitalization.

Koelhoeffer escape from hospital staff at about 11:00 Tuesday evening.

Iowa City Police originally believed he had left the area, but shortly after 5:30 Wednesday morning a white male dressed in a hospital gown forced a women from her car and took off.

Koelhoeffer apparently crashed that vehicle soon after the car jacking and has not been seen since.

Keolhoeffer is facing trial on four felony charges stemming from the October robbery of the Pilot Grove Savings Bank in Packwood and the McDonalds in Fairfield.

He now faces numerous other charges as a result of his escape and the carjacking.

Police consider him dangerous, and say do not approach him if spotted but immediately call law enforcement.
