Redmon & Lee Youth & Adult Community Association not sure why
QUINCY, ILL. -- The Quincy Housing Authority has issued an eviction notice to a 65-year-old community center.
The Authority director says there is a long list of concerns regarding management and use of the authority-owned building.
Redmon & Lee board members say they are just learning of those concerns and support their director and the center's mission.
KHQA's Jarod Wells reports.
The Quincy Housing Authority owns the building at 815 Elm Street on Quincy's northwest part of town. It provides the building free of rent to Redmon and Lee Youth and Adult Community Association. QHA pays for utilities and building maintenance. It has some concerns with how the building is being used.
QHA Executive Director Jerry Gille said, "We had heard, for example, that the building was going to be used as a daycare. That is not consistent with the current lease."
That is just one of several concerns the Housing Authority has with the management and use of the building. But Redmon and Lee Volunteer Executive Director Crystal Young says Tuesday, December 14th was the first time she's heard about the concerns.
Young said, "We have nothing to follow and that's not how you do business. How are you going to give some expectations and you have not laid it out plain and clear."
Board members are proud of what the community center has become and want to continue its mission.
Board member Danette Hill said, "People in the community are being fed, they're getting benefits, they're getting help."
Board member Mike Smith said, "The center is thriving so that is what I think is important. This center is thriving and I'm proud to be a board member."
All legality aside, QHA Executive Director Jerry Gille says Redmon and Lee provide excellent programs for the community. And both sides can agree kids are the number one priority.
The Quincy Housing Authority has extended the eviction until January 31st
The Redmon and Lee board has until then to negotiate a new lease with the Quincy Housing Authority.
