HANNIBAL, MO. -- Thursday is the busiest travel day of the holiday season -- and the roads will be full of people trying to get where they need to go.
Crews at the Missouri Department of Transportation have worked hard to make sure the roads are clear for holiday travels.
"We've prepared our equipment. We did repairs from the last event that we had, and we're working on preparing some material so we'll be ready for this event," said Mundle.
That material is a combination of salt, river sand, and cinder that will be put on the roads as the snow falls. But the most important thing crews do, gets done *before the storm even comes.
"We're doing a pretreatment with salt brine which will get a layer of treatment down before the storm comes and then when the storm comes, hopefully that will delay the road coverings. It will also make it easier after the storm to clean up," said maintenance crew leader Sean Unglesbee.
The trucks also get some work done to them.
"As the trucks come in, as we prepare for the storm, we clean them, we service them, we make sure that all the repairs are made, so that when we do get some storm conditions, hopefully we'll have as little downtime as possible," said Mundle.
That also allows the drivers to focus on safety.
"Safety is the most important thing for themselves and the public," said Mundle.
"Stay safe out there ourselves. In very slick conditions we got a lot of things to watch. People traveling, and making sure that we try to do the best job we can out here," said Unglesbee.
There are 132 snow plows in northeast Missouri -- 8 are stationed in Hannibal, and all will be working hard to keep the roads clear and safe.
MoDOT also reminds you to slow down, especially when driving around snow plows.
If you have to travel this holiday weekend, make sure you check the road conditions before you hit the road. Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri all have road condition websites.
