UPDATE: January 14 at 3:25 p.m.
We finally know how an 8-year-old Liberty boy died on December 27th.
The Adams County Coroner Gary Hamilton released his findings Friday and says that the cause of Austin DeWitt's death was determined to be "Sepsis due to group A beta hemolytic streptococcus."
The autopsy showed findings that were compatible with sepsis.
Sepsis is a blood infection that can be caused by many types of bacteria.
Group A streptococcus is a very common organism and is responsible for a variety of diseases including strep throat, ear infections and skin infections. The autopsy confirmed that there was no evidence of meningitis.
KHQA has a call in to a medical expert to get a little more information on health concerns over Group A streptococcus. We would like to stress that not every case of strep throat or ear infection resulting from Group A streptococcus results in sepsis or death.
