HANNIBAL, MO. -- The Hannibal City Council voted 6 to 1 Tuesday night on the first reading of an ordinance that would abolish the Hannibal Fire Board.
The ordinance would require the fire chief to report directly to the city manager instead.
Fourth ward council member Barry Louderman was the lone "no" vote.
Council members say this would allow for more regularity.
"You would see more consistency across the board with the city manager being in charge of all departments instead of having several council members persay on a board controlling a certain department," said Hannibal City Council member Michael Dobson.
The ordinance will be up for a second reading in two weeks.
If the idea gets the go ahead from the council, voters would decide the issue in the April election.
