SPRINGFIELD, ILL. (AP) -- Preliminary totals show that Illinois hunters took nearly 3,300 deer during this season's muzzleloader-only hunt in December.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday that the figure from the December hunt is less than the just more than 4,700 deer that Illinois hunters took in 2009.

The muzzleloader season's record year was 2006 when hunters killed nearly 6,000 deer.

Department statistics show that Pike County had the highest number of deer killed statewide at 116.

It is followed by 84 deer in Fulton County, 82 in Jo Daviess County, 77 in LaSalle County and 74 in both Bureau and Jefferson counties.
